Erika's Passions

Everyday life/Classics, Germany 1976

For four years Erika and Franziska did not see each other. Ten years earlier they had the illusion of equal chances: because they were equally young, both attractive, both imaginative. They overlooked, from the beginning, what would separate them: their very different heart, their different character. Erika is the practical one. She says: "I earn our bread, you find out what could interest you in the world". What she doesn't say is her expectation: "... and then you earn the bread and I can go into the world". Franziska likes to be sent out into the world, changes goals often and extensively, and never comes to an end - perhaps because there is none for her. Dissatisfaction arises in both of them. Erika feels exploited. Franziska basically resents that Erika allows her to exploit her. Erika's passion, however, is to always burden herself with more than she can handle, and then to be surprised that no one ever gets the idea that it is not her job to put the garbage can on the street again. In a long nightly conversation, the friends try to clear up these connections - not without hope.
