Let yourself be carried away by the rich and complex art of Johann Sebastian Bach
Our collection "Bach, Master of Baroque" brings together performances of works by the Leipzig Cantor. Piano students struggle with his 'Well-Tempered Clavier', but Bach also composed two 'Passions', concertos and countless cantatas, among other works.
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) came from a large family of musicians. Born into a modest household and orphaned at an early age, he was taken in by his older brother, who continued his musical education. He copied and studied the scores he could find and became familiar with German, but also French and Italian music. An excellent violinist, organist and harpsichordist, he obtained positions as court musician and choirmaster in various cities: Weimar, Köthen and especially Leipzig, where he remained until his death.
During his lifetime, he was a famous virtuoso musician but a little known composer. He was rediscovered in the 19th century. Considered today as one of the most important composers in history, he is a major exponent of Baroque music who worked a lot on counterpoint, key changes and harmony. He wrote hundreds of pieces, some of which have been lost; fortunately, many have survived!
